Symptoms to recognize

Pain that worsens with movement or at the end of the day, stiffness after rest, localized swelling and, in more marked cases, warmth and redness are the most common signs. The duration and distribution of pain help to orient the cause: pain that gradually appears in a single joint from exertion is often related to osteoarthritis or wear and tear, while symmetrical pain in multiple joints with morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes may indicate an autoimmune inflammatory condition.

What the latest clinical studies say

A larger randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study on high-dose oral CBD (600 mg/day) as an adjunct to paracetamol in knee osteoarthritis (Pramhas et al., The Lancet Regional Health – Europe, 2023) did not, however, find a superior analgesic benefit to placebo, also noting an increase in liver enzyme alterations at that high dosage — all of which resolved after discontinuation.
